Artist's Comments

Yet more sketchings from the margins of my notepad at work. Today I hacked it to bits to free them.

They started out taking direct inspiration from the game Shadow of the Colossus (notable for its superb art direction), and later took on a kind of Aztec aesthetic, with architecture comprising a greater part of each.
As to what they actually are.. who knows.

Biro and pencil.
Each is approx 3x4cm.

All that detail in such a tiny workspace? How do you do it?

I'm looking at them and thinking Guardians of the Temples perhaps...maybe some ancient creatures, created with the sole purpose of guarding the secrets of the Mayan/Aztec civilisations, the most precious of knowledge secured in the deepest bowels of the oldest temples...

Erm, by putting much more effort into them than into what I'm supposed to be doing. Plus I could get fired, so it feels more like being a put-upon, renegade artist. All I need now are some mental problems...

You get so poetic within the smallest of comments! I should get you to write the Artist's comments for mine, you're a great deal more evocative.
Thankyou nice lady.
Awwwww! Don't be daft! :giggle:

It's just the first thing that popped into my head when I saw these...they are just so evocative.

These sketches are incredible. So much detail in so little space. And the perspectives are really interesting to look at. :)

:) Doing a little bit at a time makes it easier to do detail I find, because you don't get bored.
Thanks for noting the perspective, too. I tried to keep the light sourcing consistent, which doesn't really come out particularly well as the pencil is lightened.
I've got a couple more of these which I might post.
Please do! C: I love seeing people coming up with their own Colossi.

Speaking of which, have you ever seen this one video that shows all the colossi that were cut from the game? I wish they could have included 'em since not only were they nifty, they also could have given gamers a challenge. :<

The video's right here if you want to see it:

I love these along with the other sketch page. I can see the Aztec inspiration. It works out really really well.

Thankyou. It's a fantastic source of inspiration. The feel of their design is so unusual and otherworldly. My favourites from the game are the third one (tall) and the first flying one (birdlike). Awe-inspiring all round. i just wish there was more to do around the landscape
ditto!
